The Beatles Raiding of the Vaults. ***1/2Jun 28, 2010
Released in conjunction with the ABC-TV documentary, these previously unissued recordings capture the Beatles on a voyage and working diligently on a formula to change the world of modern music forever. By the time they appear on Ed Sullivan's show, game over. They conquered the youth and some adults. Existing rules were laid to rest.

The chronology makes sense. All of the live recordings are a valuable addition to their legacy, especially the 1963 recordings in Sweden. When John sings a fervid "Money" with pared-down backing, he(they) prefigure punk by at least three years. They're still starving artists. The sardonic wit that introduces a few of the numbers is priceless, especially John's intro to a great "Twist and Shout". And their hilarious skit that segues into a mash-like "Moonlight Bay" is a hidden classic. Beyond the live material, you get a great Pete Best-era instrumental, "Cry For A Shadow". There's a rollicking take of "Can't Buy Me Love" that I may even prefer to the original. But most welcome of all is that killer version of the long-bootlegged "Leave My Kitten Alone", which should have nudged off "Mr. Moonlight" in contention for a slot on "Beatles '65" or "Beatles For Sale" in the first place.

There's peripheral stuff included here to be sure. The Decca audition is lackluster. The primitive home demos, like that of "In Spite Of All Danger" and the false starts to say "No Reply" work strictly as historical artifacts, but they don't hold up to repeated scrutiny. Taken as a whole, this can be an audio delight in low doses. Recommended unequivocally to completists but for the casual listener get their core catalogue first. ***1/2 stars

BEWARE!!! Not the original songsDec 12, 2009
You might think that you are getting your favorite Beatles songs here, but beware that most of them actually are rehearsal versions, different takes (some of them partial), there are several different takes of the same song here and there, and sadly, some of the most popular songs' original versions are missing (again, replaced by annoying rehearsal versions). You are MUCH better of buying separate albums than collecting this hodgepodge of "takes"

Great album. Has many early previously unreleased material including the Ed Sullivan show. Great to listen when you're in a funky Beatles mood to listen to something other than the standards.

Well, before I go into an description of Anthology 1, I must say:
When I want to consider buying something, I read the "1 Star" reviews first. I want to see what people dislike about the product. I read the 1 star reviews for Anthology 1 & 2, and I found a very disturbing one about 2. It said that the Beatles were terrible, and thought they got too much credit. Well, the first thing I thought was: was the anthology the only thing you listened too? Because you can't make a good judgement if you have not listened to their actual records! Geez, how people jump right into an idea, and never come out.
The next 1 star review I read was about #1, and it complained about the poor quality of some of the songs, perticually the first couple on the 1st disk. I thought then: Well, of course it's bad quality because they made the early songs under bad recording devices! Once again the ingnorance of some people. I think ofr any Beatles fan the anthology would be a good addition to your collection. It has a lot of early stuff, not seen before. Also on the second disk includes different takes of the songs through Beatles For Sale, and live recordings.
You will also find interesting little speeches by the band, and others.
