5Great, challenging funMar 26, 2003
By Lisa Shea "medieval swordfighting enthusiast"
Skateboarding is a fun sport - and Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4 lets anyone master the cool moves and spins from the comfort of your couch.

Let's start with the huge amount of customization available. You create your character, male or female, giving him a name, home town, age. You then can choose his hair style and color, shirt, pants, shoes, hat, logos, tattoos on ALL parts of the body.

For each item (say a shirt) there is a HUGE range of styles, colors and logos available. You can even tweak the various body parts to make them bigger or smaller! I was extremely impressed with how well you could really customize your player.

Next, there's a full skateboard park creator. You can build your fantasy park with ramps, benches, stairs and much more in it. Then you can have fun cutting loose! There are many sample parks included to play on or to draw inspiration from.

Now, on to the game. There's a Career mode that lets you move through a series of levels, accomplishing tasks on each one. You start out on the college level, zooming around, avoiding the cars on the streets or grabbing on to them for a ride. There are people hanging out around the college to talk to. One wants you to rip down signs promoting the local cop. Another wants you to search for letters. A third wants you to harass the frat boys that are causing trouble. There are a bunch of different missions, each one different, each one helping you to learn a different aspect of gameplay.

You can play single missions to, or against friends if you wish. It can be a bit tricky at first to get the hang of skateboarding, just like in real life. You tend to land sideways and go SPLAT on the pavement, little blood drops flying (you can turn off gore if you wish). But soon you get the hang of it and are doing cool tricks off the railings and walls you come across.

The levels are well laid out and very interesting, with fun scenery to interact with. The various challenges test different parts of your skills and help you learn new ones as you go. The soundtrack is great, with a wide selection of bands. You can turn on and off different songs if some don't appeal to you.

Highly recommended for sports fans!

5Great game and very addictingMar 02, 2003
By R. L. Bennett
First off, this game is very addicting, I have trouble putting the controller down sometimes. You just want to keep trying to bust out the tricks. I had never played the previous Tony Hawk games so this was the first I played and the one I learned to play on. The game will not be easy if you haven't played any Tony Hawk's before, but enough time you will learn moves and start to get pretty good at the game in a short time. Just don't give up is what you have to say, grinding, jumps and landing combos will be hard. But once you finally get the hang of it, like I said, you won't want to stop playing. Has a good multiplayer mode too, everything about this game is great.

5Can this possibly be true?!Jan 07, 2003
By zach darienzo
This is one of the best games for the xbox yet! I hated the other three tony hawks but this one blows the rest of them away. This game is actually realistic unlike the other three. There are new special tricks and the scoring is more efficient. The best part of this game is the flatland tricks. They are so much fun to watch and do and also they are very easy points. The new career mode is much more efficient. You go to the level that you are goona be on in career mode and when you start its like free skate where you can just skate around and find cash icons and practice and land some big tricks and all in all just have some fun. But to get goals and more money you visit special people with arrows over there heads and they give you individual goals. Each goal has its own time limit. This career mode is much more fun and also there is new 2 player games. If you are looking to buy a new game for xbox get tony hawks pro skater 4!!!

4Good, but not the best of the seriesJul 17, 2003
By Michael P. Sweeney "eldirty"
I'm one of those rare people who get every action-trick sports games, granted some I wait on, and others I will get day of release, and well I waited on THPS4 and glad I did.

First off the game went under major reconstructive surgery for this incarnation, pretty much throwing away the 2:00 clock. I have serious problems with that, it's what made THPS, trying to do the goals within the time frame. Also out is the tape system, and again I'm seriously upset, just like I was for the arrival of THPS2.

The gameplay is THPS without a question. Its a little dulled down from the sharpness of THPS3, but gives a little more realism to the game, but if I wanted that, I'd go out and pick up the deck and go skating. Many of the challenges are excrutiatingly tedious. Actually about 90% of them are tedious, I like the races, and the traditional collect SKATE of find 5 whatevers in 2 minutes, but then the competitions don't have the skate park feel to them. The levels are big, but fairly unimaginative (Chicago from Mat Hoffman 2....I won't say more)

If you're looking for a THPS game, I would go 3 and maybe even 2x before 4, but if you're looking for new levels and don't have 4, pick it up now that it is at a platnium price, and be glad you didn't spend twice as much on it.

5Tony Hawk 4Dec 26, 2002
By Abe
A must buy! One of the most addictive games I've ever played, I literally stayed up two nights in a row playing. The fourth game has everything the other three lacked. My biggest complaint with all the others was the lack of difficulty, which, in turn, made the games get boring fast. This game is the complete opposite, it will keep you busy for weeks even if you're an experienced player. The graphics are incredible, the levels enormous, and the soundtrack is great. In short, it is the best Tony Hawk game and could also outrank many other Xbox games. Pick up a copy today.
