One of the BEST, I now play this with my grandson, when he comes over for a visit. Of course hes new to this type of game and can't get enough playing time. The fun we have had makes this game worth ten times what I paid for it. I just bought another copy for him for Christmas. Till then I hope to keep playing.

I'm still in shock that no one told me how inferior the PS2 version of Resident Evil 4 is compared to the GameCube and Wii. I knew from the Gamespot review that the graphics were not as good as the GameCube, but Greg Kasavin never mentioned in his review how bad the sound is! I own both the GameCube and the Wii version of this game, and I know from experience that one of the most terrifying aspects of this modern classic is its beautifully haunting Dolby digital sound. However the PS2 port is horribly inferior in this area. The sound is, to be completely frank, terrible! Imagine listening to this entire game through a MIDI sound file that you downloaded off of Limewire. That's what it sounds like. Do yourself a favor and go purchase a GameCube for $50.00 and Gamestop and then get this game. You won't regret it in the long run... I swear!

The first game that got me into the Resident Evil seriesJul 12, 2010
I played this game for the first time about 3 years ago, and I still love it. That was when I first started playing rated M games on my PS3 and my friend loved this game, so I decided to buy it and test it out. It was one of the best action games I've played with easy controls, tons of enemies surrounding you, lots of awesome guns, and incredible boss fights. I just loved the environment that got a little creepy from time to time, as well as the parasite enemies. A few mindless puzzles were mixed in here and there as well as some merchants to buy/sell weapons and upgrade, which does kind of take the survival out of this game, but hey, it does come handy when you are facing 20 enemies at once and need the fire power. Its not too short nor long, but does feel like an adventure and ends with you feeling satisfied with the gameplay and journey, even if the storyline is pretty generic and uninteresting. The story is pretty simple but overused, a psychotic cult leader kidnaps the presidents daughter and plans to use her as bait which will then infect the entire country and cause a complete outbreak of his plague, making everyone under his control. How original. And if you didn't guess, you also get infected at a point in the game and must find the cure. And this game has a lot of corny lines and cliche moments. It still is the best action game on the market and has a pretty solid environment, with a very good unlockables.

+ Good evolution to the 3rd person camera and shooting mechanics
+ Game is pretty good length and can't typically be beaten under 10 hours
+ Boss fights are well placed and fun
+ Weapon upgrade system
+ Great unlockable weapons, costumes, and mercenary mode along with Assignment Ada and Separate Ways
+ Lots of fun ways to kill enemies, plus parasite enemies are interesting
+ Knife actually isn't underpowered and can be useful

- Takes away almost all survival with enemies dropping ammo and health
- Protecting Ashley gets annoying and becomes more of a chore with her hideous shrieks
- After fulling upgrading all your guns, game becomes so easy on seconds playthrough that you might want to buy a new weapon and not upgrade it to make more of a challenge
- The story is kind of lame and pulls away from the series, and you aren't really pulled into like the other Resident Evils
- A few annoying and flat characters who you will grow to hate like Salazar, Ashley, and even Saddler at times
- Leon is not cool at all in this game and tries too hard with his lame lines
- Kind of linear maps where it makes it obvious where you need to get to and what paths to take
- Can't play extra overtime mode Ashley offers at the end, just kidding who would want to see that

So this game is not the best Resident Evil in terms of survival or horror, but is the best in terms of gameplay and aiming. A lot of unlockables make for good replay, and there aren't many long puzzles that you have to redo, although there are annoying chase scenes. It is one of my favorite games and one of the best third person shooters for PS2. I would probably call this game the death of the classic RE series with the camera angle, shooting, and flesh eating zombies as we know it though. But we have Dead Space to bring back horror and survival to gaming.

When i first played this game it was pretty exciting i liked the new controls, the upgradable weapons but as time went on playing it felt more like a combat game rather then a survival horror game. It's like playing a Texas Chainsaw Massacre game instead of trying to avoid slow moving/mindless zombies that attack you when you get too close to them.

In reality this game was fun, but it did get long & boring. The story seemed to diminish as you went along so it seemed like Capcom worked its hardest during the beginning. If you played RE-RE3 you would notice the differences easily. Code Veronica wasn't even that great of a game, but even i liked that game a bit more then this one. I never finished this game mostly due to the fact it just didn't seem like a regular RE game. No Umbrella corporation & Capcom seemed too quick to shut them down. Not only that instead of the games being fairly moderate in difficulty, this game seems impossible. I couldn't get past various points in the game without giving up & going to something else. Even with a strategy guide it seemed wayy to difficult. There is no auto aim but you do get a laser aim. Controls are a bit easier to understand though & reloading ammo is more realistic.. would have been cool if there were mindless zombies walking around but it seems that most people prefer action over strategy.

I like this game, but it doesn't feel like a RE game & its not as scary as the older games were. I might go back to this game someday but for now im sticking with the original RE! =)

This game is a great game that survival horror fans should check out! But there is something that makes the Playstation 2 version not as good as the Gamecube version...

The Good:Great story, awesome graphics, smarter zombies, better weapons, etc.
The Not-So-Bad: The controls.
The Bad:Nothing

The controls don't feel right on the PS2 version. On the Gamecube version, the controls were smooth and intuitive. The PS2 version's controls are not as good. It just doesn't feel right.
However, you will quickly forget the control issue as soon as you play the game. The PS2 version has more depth and lasting appeal than the Gamecube version. For instance, the Cube version has only the main game and the two minigames to keep yourself occupied. The PS2 version has the main game(with a few more weapons to buy), the two minigames, AND an all-new additional adventure(titled Seperate Ways)
where you play as Ada Wong. You'll still be popping this into your PS2 3 or more years from now.
I give this game around a 4.2 stars.
