Description:

Set in the year 2008, Ghost Recon is a Tom Clancy-inspired war game that puts you in command of a Special Forces unit pitted against Russian ultranationalists trying to rebuild the former Soviet Union. Although the story arc is grand in scale (in keeping with Clancy's style), the game doesn't involve you in the war's major battles. You'll actually spend most of your time behind enemy lines--rescuing downed fighter pilots, knocking out enemy patrols, ambushing armor columns.

5A thinking man's shooter.Jul 16, 2010
Still my favorite in the series, Ghost Recon 1 just seems to strike a perfect balance between squad combat and covert infiltration. The ability to assume control of any of your individual soldiers was a feature that should have been left in every installment, and the overall sense of "patient hunter and marksman" just feels RIGHT in this game. True, the graphics are somewhat crude compared to later Tom Clancy titles, but this title uses 5.1 Surround to it's fullest, and the careful pace and planning required to succeed in this game make a victory just that much more rewarding. Also a nice feature is the ability to improve your soldier's stats, and the variety of units you can assemble, from sniper squads to heavily-armed fire teams. You make the call. A classic. It should be in your game library, and it also plays fine in the 360. Tango down!!

5One of the greatest games on the Xbox.Jun 17, 2010
First in a series of games that continues today on the newer Xbox 360, Tom Clancy's "Ghost Recon" is one of the greatest games I've ever played. It is, even today, such a welcome break from the vastly better-known and more popular run-and-gun games that are so contradictory to how wars are actually fought that I feel like a load has been taken off my back when I play it. Containing 15 missions, 50 tasks for Quick Mission assignments, and a rank structure attached to one's profile, "Ghost Recon" is a great deal of fun and has high replay value.

Set in 2008, the game opens with radical ultranationalists having seized power in the Kremlin, putting a man named Arbatov as President of a reformed Soviet Union, hilariously called the "Russian Democratic Union". Democratic, ha ha! Ukraine, Belarus, and Kazakhstan are among those who one way or another fall back under Russian control early on. The Baltic States- Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia, as well as the Republic of Georgia in the Caucasus, remain staunchly defiant, and it is the fight over them that decides the course of the war that Russian expansionism causes. Initially hoping to use Ossetian guerrilas to help them take the country, Russia invades Georgia with over three full tank divisions when its subversion efforts fail due to the efforts of the Ghosts and NATO in general. Open war sees the Georgians, backed openly now by the United States military, fighting fiercely but unable to hold back the Russian forces. An evacuation begins, and after giving the Russians one more punch the Ghosts are the last to leave. Georgia's government flees to Geneva, Switzerland while a puppet government is set up by President Arbatov. Briefings given at the start of each mission show not only the orders of the day, the date, time, and weather, but also tell how things are going. At the fall of Georgia, the open hostility of Germany, the UK, and the USA towards the Russian invasion is made obvious.

Next comes an invasion of the Baltics. They resist with great fierceness as well, but like the Georgians are soon overrun by the much larger Russian army. An underground movement is mentioned to exist in Lithuania, the 1st Armored Division of the US Army is spoken of as being a key force in battling the Russians, and through it all the Ghosts keep hitting the Russians where it hurts. I found the mission where the Ghosts are sent to escort an Abrams tank column- three, perhaps- through war-torn Vilnius. The tanks turn their turrets and fire with such slowness that one wonders if the tank, or its crew, are imitating a turtle. But the effects on Russian armor are undeniable. One BMP I encountered had nothing but a heavy machine gun, meaning that when it fired on the lead Abrams its fire bounced off.

Soon enough, Russian military brass begins turning on Arbatov, blaming him for the disaster that the Baltic invasion turns out to be. I found this rather amusing, and did not respect the big officers for that. Sure, they were ordered by Arbatov to invade, but it was their failure in the Baltics. A military one. Sure, Russia was doomed to fail politically as well- the Baltic republics hated the Soviets, and in this war anti-Russian hatred must be running at an all-time high. But it sounded to me like the big Russian generals were just making excuses, looking for somebody to blame. But the political discord only helps the RDU's enemies, and soon Russia is embroiled in open civil war, with NATO backing the side that opposes the ultranationalists. A nuclear weapon is detonated by the RDU forces during a battle near Moscow, and by then Arbatov has been executed by his own generals. The ultranationalists have, by then, about as much support from the Russian people as Osama Bin Laden does from the American people. Soon enough, a handful of RDU fanatics holding the Kremlin are all that remains, and after one last attack by the Ghosts they are finished, as well.

The plot is quite fascinating, and I loved getting the feeling that I, as part of a US Army Special Forces unit, was playing a key role in putting an end to a reborn USSR. So "Ghost Recon" gets high marks from me on the plot's introduction and execution. Music is excellent, as well, though none is played in game. Frankly, it was better that way, at least for this game. Graphics were good enough, and aren't all that bad even with all that has come since. The Xbox could certainly do better, but it could do worse, too. As one progresses through the campaign, there are special objectives that allow one to unlock unique characters with higher skill levels than the generic ones you start out with. Unique characters are sometimes foreign allies of the US. Two are British, two German, two Slavic, probably Lithuanian given the time they are unlocked at. The rest are American. All have different weapons from the generic ones, and more can be unlocked through Quick Missions. Going through the campaign, you must be mindful of the unique characters- they can be wounded like the generic ones and return to action after sitting one mission out, but if they are KIA they stay that way. In quick missions and the campaign, medals can be earned by each character. They are: the Purple Heart (WIA), Bronze Star (15 kills), Silver Star (20 kills), Distinguished Service Cross (25 kills) and Medal of Honor (30 kills). The last two are extremely difficult to earn, especially without dying, which is quite realistic given their real-life criteria. As an example- I once used one unique character, Susan Gray, to storm a Russian POW camp, free some prisoners, and kill the entire garrison, using only a silenced MP5. Shot several times and with over 30 kills, Gray got a Purple Heart and Medal of Honor. Speaking of that mission- I felt a sense of outrage over being ordered to break out prisoners from a camp solely because one of them was a Senator's son. Otherwise, they'd have been left to sit the war out, but one of them was *special*. That I had to put lives on the line for the sake of political favoritism did not make me very happy, but the Ghosts would have done it anyway, so I did. I was far more happy to free the other soldier, and a Russian citizen who was apparently a real pain in the butt for the ultranationalists. See, I liked them better 'cause they weren't *special*. But anyway.

The combat in this game is far more realistic than Call of Duty will ever be. It can take surprisingly few bullets to kill a man- or woman- even when in combat gear. If you try running and gunning in this game, the Russians will send you to the light at the end of the tunnel very fast. You cannot take cover Gears-of-War style, either. So you have to move slowly, deliberately, planning each move and taking each shot with care. This is most necessary on the highest of the 3 difficulties, Elite, because even with those loud, inaccurate Kalashnikovs, the Russians are superb shots and there's always more of them than you. Some aspects of the game fascinated me- running makes for easy detection, but gives the highest movement rate. Crouching makes you less of a target and harder to spot, but slower than running. Going prone makes your aim as stable as it can be, and can allow a lone player to hide from Russian patrols with almost total protection from being seen. Crawling, however, is very slow. It can take some thirty minutes to crawl across somebody's front yard, especially if you stop to look around along the way.
The rank structure the game uses for your profile is interesting. "Ghost Recon" starts you off as a PFC, moves up to Master Sergeant eventually, then from 1st LT to Captain, Major, Colonel, and Brigadier General. One-star rank demands completion of all 50 tasks, and believe me, that is gonna take some doing. Some of the tasks are quite simple, but once all the easy ones are done, the hard ones will remain. They pushed me to the limit, having to try as hard as I ever have in a game to outwit an enemy that has superior numbers and firepower always. Trying to kill all the Russians in a map, especially on Elite in a Recon mission, is nearly impossible and not at all practical. A frustrating twist to a number of Recon missions is that they require a certain accuracy percentage, which means you must fire and score at least one kill before reaching the extraction point.

Altogether, an excellent game that we simply don't see enough of these days. I've never much liked the unrealistic nature of Call of Duty games, though they are enjoyable enough in their own way. But games like this will endure, long after so many of those run-and-gun games have been forgotten. This game isn't exactly how wars are fought either, but it's closer than a lot of others.

4Excellent tactical military FPSMar 10, 2007
Mirrors Rainbow Six 3 in many ways...good graphics. Love the way the enemy uses his rifle to hobble away when you shoot him in the leg. Many of the same tactics are still used today in Advanced Warfighter...

4Next level shooterMay 22, 2006

Far from your typical squad based shooter; Ghost Recon has a few things that distinguish it from the rest. You have two squads at your command, Alpha and Bravo; each has a squad leader and two additional squad mates. Each squad operates as a unit and cannot be separated into individuals. However, you can tell a squad to go over to a certain place, like making Alpha team hide at the top of a cliff and pick off any incoming enemy soldiers heading toward your position as you make your way to take out an enemy hideout.

GR has four different classes for each member of your squads (e.g. demolition and your basic infantry). The game does not stop there it allows you to pick each members weapon and secondary weapon (which there are a lot of). Ghost Recon has some RPGish elements to it. The more any member of the GR team is used, the better his skills will get. If you get a squad mate hurt in battle he will have to take some time out of action if you want him to heal or you can keep him in the fray, risking the loss of a soldier. If you lose a man on the field he is gone for the rest of the mission.

The battles in this game are fast, furious and truly intense. You will get breaks in the action to catch your breath. The AI in this game will have you second guessing almost every thing you do, they will suppress you with fire and have other members try to flank you. They will use this maneuver often but on occasion they will employ other ways to fill you full of lead. You must use strategy; you cannot go into an enemy base with guns blazing and expect to be successful.

Although there are now new and improved titles in the Ghost Recon series, this is all in all a great game which is now playable on the Xbox 360 as well.

5One of Xbox's best Shooters ever!!!Mar 28, 2006
Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon is an incredibly fun first person shooter. If you like military squad based games, this is definately for you. The graphics (when it came out) were pretty top-notch and had some extremely fun multiplayer gametypes. I actually didn't start playing this game until Island Thunder was already out (which I played like crazy!) and it still held up as a great game. The sounds in the game really made it seem realistic, like you were actually there on the battlefield. I mean, looking back at it today, the game doesn't hold up in terms of graphics and presentation, but the gameplay is still one the best shooters there has been. Everything worked in it, it wasn't that hard to pick up and play, and the fact that it actually played like a tactical shooter made it stand out from the rest.

Okay, let's now talk about it's Xbox Live play. In simple terms, "it was fantastic." There were plenty of maps available, all with different environments. You could choose what class you wanted to play as, Rifleman, Snipers, Support, and Demolition, and then pick your gun kit, which there were also plenty to choose from. You could play the multiplayer portion of this game for hours on end and not get bored, something that's hard to come by these days (except GRAW, hehe).

Presentation:

One big gripe about the presentation of this game was that the menus were kinda difficult to navigate through (kinda like GR2). This drove me nuts a bit, but this was fixed by the time Island Thunder came out.

Graphics:

In it's day, Ghost Recon for the Xbox had some pretty sweet graphics, unlike other games on the market back then. It seemed pretty realistic and along with the sound made a great gaming experience.

Sound:

The sound in this game was pretty fantastic when it was released. Everything seemed very realistic and gave the gamer a great gaming experience. Explosions, bullets firing...exerything was great!

Gameplay:

This was probably my favorite aspect of this game. It played like a great military squad based shooter and was very tactical, unlike the run and gun games we find on the market today. The gameplay is truly what gave this game it's kick.

Lasting Appeal:

With it's great multiplayer aspects and Live capabilities, this game had great lasting appeal. People played it up to and through GRIT, and some even played till GR2 came out. Talk about lasting appeal...this game definatley had some!!!
